Petrikirche - A lift to heaven
At the place of a romanic wooden-built church the Petrikirche was built
as a three aisle hall church between 1227 and 1259. From 1450 to 1519 it
was extended to a five aisle hall church.
At times 28 chaples existed at the sides of the Petrikirche. From 1450
to 1519 they were remodeled and became new aisles at the northern and
southern side so that the Petrikirche was now a five aisle hall church.
After the war-destructions the building of the church started late, in
1958. In April 1961 the tower was completed at a hight of 108 metres.
Since 1935 a lift inside the tower brings visitors up to a 50 metres high
platform where you can enjoy a wonderful view over Lübeck and it's
surroundings.
With the help of a private initiative, the "St.-Petri-Bauverein", the
church was comletely restored and consecrated once again in 1987. Today
the building is used for cultural events.
