The salt memory

Beside the getting gate is the six former salt memory (16. to 18. Jh.) directly to the Trave. They are the only historical buildings of Luebeck, which are outside of the former stadtmauern. Here the salt was stored and changed, which was transported from Luebeck over the Stecknitz channel (forerunner of the Elbe Luebeck channel) to Luebeck. The white gold of the north an in demand export article was and belonged to the most important merchandise as preservative (particularly for herrings). Later, than the herring swarms in the Baltic Sea area were missing, or Dutch salt herrings were more cheaply imported, used one the memory for the storage of grain and wood.
