Some were guilty. Most were probably innocent. Some were "satanists," others were not. Some were just senile. Or too ugly. Or too pretty. Or just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Frank Donovan says: "Several modern writers claim that 9,000,000 people met their deaths during the witchcraft persecution but offer no valid statistical records to support this estimate. On the other end of the scale is the 'educated guess' of R.H.Robbins and others that the total may have been about 200,000. Contemporary records are spotty and incomplete. Many deaths were probably never recorded and other archives have been lost thru time."

I feel we can reasonably estimate the lower end of the scale at about 250,000 persons killed, with a high end of perhaps as many as one-half million thru into these "more enlightened" times, as people are still being killed for witchcraft on the Navajo reservations and in parts of Africa and S. America.
