Message-ID: The White House has finally come out with an explanation of the way in which conspiratorial activities come to light. At least, the White House Counsel's Office has come out with a 331-page report called "Communication Stream of Conspiracy Commerce", explaining for the first time since the Nixon Administration how a conspiracy exists to plant fringe stories in the *media*. And it's all done via the Internet! It goes like this: Well heeled Sinister Organizations cook up a story and disseminate it by...well, heck, let me do a flow chart for you: (WELL FUNDED RIGHT WING) (THINK TANKS AND INDIVIDUALS) -------------V------------- | -------------------------------- | | | V V V (WESTERN) (AMERICAN) (PITTSBURGH) (JOURNALISM) (SPECTATOR) (TRIBUNE) (CENTER) ---V----- (REVIEW) ---V---- | ----V---- | | | ------------------------------------- | V *THE INTERNET!* --------------- | | -----------------V | | | V | (BRITISH) | (TABLOIDS) | | | v-------------------v---|------------------v | | | | |v------------------|---v-----------------v| || | | || VV V V VV (Wall Street) (Washington) (New York) (JOURNAL) (TIMES) (POST) | | | ------------------------------------------ | V (CONGRESSIONAL) (COMMITTEES) | ------------------------------ | | V V (WASHINGTON) (NEW YORK) (POST) (TIMES) Once It reaches the DC POST and NY TIMES the story has been "legitimized" and will be picked up by other papers worldwide. One of the tools of this procedure tried to crawfish out of it by the well-worn pretense that such a thing was implausible. "Sounds at first like an April Fool's joke, but since this is January the [White House staff] must be serious... you would expect [the President's office] to be too busy dealing with Elvis visits and UFO landings on the South Lawn to bother with [this account]." Of course, we know what to think of a line like that. There. Now we know exactly what happens, maybe we can talk about this Conspiracy stuff more rationally. -- Dick Eney
